Charitable donations, more than just cash

There are several ways to give donations to your favorite charity, such as the Elgin Children's Foundation, other than simply giving cash.

"Planning and strategizing how to accomplish your personal charitable donation objectives includes the most efficient use of your financial resources," says Chuck Raven of Raven & Company.

One alternative is to donate a life insurance policy, which could include the following:

  • an existing paid-up policy;
  • an existing policy with the donor continuing to pay the premiums;
  • a new policy with the charity as beneficiary, and the donor making annual gifts of the premiums to the charity.

The above options are all tax deductible, but the benefits will vary as Revenue Canada closely regulates each method of donation differently.

Additional ways to donate include giving gifts such as real estate, Canadian cultural property such as Robert Bateman paintings, gift annuities, and gifts in kind such as marketable securities. However, like life insurance policies, each form of charitable donation is specifically regulated.

What can your
donation do?

$10 means a child can participate in swimming lessons, baseball, basketball or other after school activities.

$20 may be used to purchase booklets promoting parenting skills

$40 will send a child to camp

$1000 helps a child pursue post-secondary education at the college or university of their choice

Remember that the federal government has now made it easier to make charitable donations by dropping the capital gains inclusion rate. In order to benefit fully from any of the above donation options donors should first consult their financial advisor who is familiar with their financial affairs and family situation.
